“Don’t Quit Fighting Until The Clock Stops.” – Gary (Coach) Schaffer, 1937-2014

The Cabbage Patch family was saddened to hear of Gary (Coach) Schaffer’s passing, but we are inspired by his coaching philosophy: “Don’t quit fighting until the clock stops.” Gary learned to play basketball at The Patch and went on to win more than 200 games as coach for Pleasure Ridge Park High School. To learn more about Gary’s extraordinary life, view his obituary.

Gary Schaffer

In a February 1978 story in Kentucky Sports World, Gary said of his childhood,

“It was easy to get in trouble, especially around Seventh and Hill where everyone hung out. Kids today think they’re so much tougher and street-wise, but they aren’t. There’s no doubt that if The Patch hadn’t been there, I might not be coaching basketball, or doing anything else respectable. It kept me off the streets, and kept me interested in making something of my life. I’m very much indebted.”

We are humbled by his words, but proud of the profound difference that The Patch made in Gary’s life.

Matthew 5:4  Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
