Cabbage Patch Lifer: Micah Curry-Petway

  • News

Micah Curry-Petway is what you could call a Cabbage Patch “lifer.” He began coming to The Cabbage Patch when he was just six years old. Now 26, Micah has benefitted from so many Cabbage Patch programs and opportunities over the years. He is currently enrolled in the nursing program at Bellarmine University, pursuing his dream of becoming a registered nurse.

Micah grew up in Shively and is the oldest of four siblings. He attended Wellington Elementary School and Nativity, and graduated from St. Xavier High School, where he ran for the track team.

He went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in integrative studies, with an emphasis on psychology, health promotion, and communication studies, from Northern Kentucky University. While at college, Micah was involved with the poetry club, the Anointed Voices Gospel choir, and participated in the “Think Like a Gentleman” pageant.

After discerning a career path in nursing, Micah completed the required prerequisites at Jefferson Technical Community College and is completing his degree at Bellarmine. It is an intensive program, requiring full days of classes as well as long shifts in the hospital, where he gains hands-on, real-life experience in the field.

Though naturally quiet in demeanor, Micah learned how to build relationships and be a leader with The Cabbage Patch’s help. “I have always been a shy person, and The Cabbage Patch has helped me grow and be more outgoing.”

Transitioning to college was a lot easier with the help of The Cabbage Patch, Micah says. It offered him a support system while also holding him accountable. “The scholarship program is motivation for us to continue building an educational and career path that we can be proud of. The financial support is helpful, but more important is the people who mentor and help us navigate the challenges of college, so we never have to feel alone,” Micah said.

From summer camps to Teen Club to a College Scholar, Micah describes The Cabbage Patch as a web of connection that helps those who are a part of it grow strong, confident, and successful. “I am so grateful that I have kept a great connection with these people who have supported my growth and encouraged my perseverance,” he shares. “The Cabbage Patch has encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and embrace trying something new.”

“I truly am glad I was caught in The Cabbage Patch web,” Micah concludes. His story is a powerful reminder of how, with your support, The Cabbage Patch can change lives.
