The Cabbage Patch Settlement House receives $75,000 “Kids Win!” Baird grant to empower Louisville youth

Louisville, KY – The Cabbage Patch Settlement House was recently selected as one of only 18 national nonprofit recipients of the 2024 Paul Purcell “Kids Win!” Annual Baird Education Grant, receiving a generous $75,000. As the sole grantee in Louisville and the state of Kentucky, this recognition underscores The Cabbage Patch’s unwavering commitment to ensuring all Louisville kids achieve success and create a better world.

The Baird grant focuses on ensuring everyone – regardless of where they live or other circumstances – has access to a quality education. Paul Purcell, Baird’s former Chairman & CEO who passed away in February 2020 and for whom the grant is named, sought to make sure the educational organizations in which he served and guided answered a very straightforward question: “Do the kids win?”

For over a century, The Cabbage Patch has answered with a resounding “YES!” determined to help kids win. With a vision to empower youth and their families to reach their full potential through life-changing academic, recreational, and mentoring opportunities aligned with Christ-centered values, The Cabbage Patch has been making a world of difference for Louisville kids and investing in their future.

“We are thrilled and deeply honored to receive this grant that will support our work to impact the lives of Louisville kids, helping them win,” said Corey Miller, Executive Director of The Cabbage Patch Settlement House. “As a Louisville mainstay, our mission has always been to uplift youth in our community with our holistic approach to support family and household stability. This grant will enable us to continue our vital work, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for kids and families to win.”

This grant will also assist The Cabbage Patch in providing access to high-quality year-round out-of-school-time programming for Louisville youth who face barriers due to income and access. While The Patch serves 650 students ages 8-18 from 32 different zip codes, nearly 80% of Patch members come from Louisville West End zip codes, a traditionally underserved region in our city. Students living in vulnerable communities have long faced inequality in resources like funding, books, technology, and extracurricular options. However, to address these current disparities, The Cabbage Patch’s highly trained teachers and volunteers work with each Patch member in a customized way to set goals and work toward their highest and brightest future.

Through academic support, post-secondary preparation, leadership development, in-house teen employment, summer camps, and recreational and enrichment activities, The Cabbage Patch aims to remove barriers ensuring every child can thrive.

“This Baird grant will have profound impact on The Cabbage Patch’s ongoing mission. Their generous support is instrumental in furthering our impact and empowering youth to unlock their full potential,” Miller said. “It is about investing in youth and their future, and when kids win at The Cabbage Patch, Louisville wins.”

About the Paul Purcell “Kids Win!” Annual Baird Education Grant

The Paul Purcell “Kids Win!” Annual Baird Education Grant was established in 2020 as a meaningful and lasting tribute to former Baird Chairman Paul E. Purcell. Purcell gave of himself tirelessly to many educational causes and firmly believed we have an obligation to ensure everyone – regardless of where they live or other circumstances – has access to a quality education. To make sure the educational organizations he served and guided were focused on that end, Purcell often asked a very straight-forward question: Do the kids win?

This year’s Kids Win! grant recipients were announced on May 7 and received more than $1.6 million in grants. Deserving 501(c)(3) educational organizations will be announced each year.

The Paul Purcell “Kids Win!” Annual Baird Education Grant is funded by Baird, Baird Foundation and Baird associates.
