When Will We See You Again?
The Cabbage Patch Board of Directors is a diverse group, and each Board member brings a very unique set of talents and connections to our mission. We value their guidance in financial matters, strategic planning, marketing plans and more, and ask any Cabbage Patch Board member why they serve and the answer will be the same: it’s all about the children! We organized a fun night of program volunteering for the Board so they could connect with the children of The Patch, and after the activities in visual arts, performing arts, athletics and education, there was one interaction that was particularly moving. A Board member was saying goodbye after helping a young girl with an art project and when asked “When will we see you again?”

Let’s Make Reading Fun Again!
Children often get frustrated when they are challenged in difficult subjects, but at The Cabbage Patch, they know that perseverance and patience will be rewarded. The Patch’s reading program was created after it was identified that many of our elementary school members were behind in their reading skills by at least a grade level. Because these students struggled with reading, books were no fun. We wanted to put the excitement and adventure back into reading, and foster a sense of dedication and commitment when it comes to learning.

On the Road to Independence with Recycled Rides
In May 2015, The New York Times published a story about the importance of transportation for those working to improve the quality of life for their families. The article referenced a Harvard study that identified commuting time as the strongest factor in escaping poverty. According to Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard economist, transportation is more of a contributing factor to social mobility than several other factors, including crime and elementary school test scores. At The Patch, we have seen how reliable transportation can change lives, and we were thrilled to partner with Oxmoor Auto Group, Progressive Insurance and the National Auto Body Council for the Recycled Rides program for the third year!

Making History at the 2015 Annual Auction
When the time came to develop a theme for the 2015 Annual Auction, we looked to the success stories of our alumni for inspiration. Many Cabbage Patch members have made history in their families by becoming the first to go to college, the first to earn a degree…the first to show future generations what is possible. Where can history go from there? The accomplishment of just one person may seem small, but the influence can be enormous! It may inspire the first female President or the first cure for a disease. We make history by driving the message “you can!” home, one child at a time.
